Did you know? India is the world's largest consumer and second-largest producer of sugar, making it a significant player in the global market. With millions of jobs and an impact on rural livelihoods, the sugar industry in India is vital to the country's economy. Additionally, a significant amount of India's sugar production is exported, making it the second-largest exporter in the world.

However, the All India Sugar Trade Association (AISTA) estimates that India will export about 8 lakh tonnes of sugar during the October–September 2024–25 marketing year. In this blog, we will discuss how India leads in the sugar export market in 2025, along with insights on sugar export from India, sugar exporters data from India, sugar HS Codes, the top 10 sugar exporters in India, and HS Codes.

How Big is the Sugar Market in India?

India is a major producer and consumer of sugar, making the Indian sugar market a major player in the global sugar industry.

The market is thought to be sizable, with a yearly production capacity of more than 30 million metric tons. According to projections, the market is expanding at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.4% from 2025 to 2031.

All About the Production of Sugar in India:

Cotton is the largest agro-based industry in India, with sugarcane and sugar production coming in second. According to reports from the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), production is anticipated to be less than 27 million metric tons (MMT) during the most recent sugar season (SSY25).

India is the world's top producer of sugarcane, with Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Karnataka at the top. The nation's production is consistently led and advanced by Uttar Pradesh. In Uttar Pradesh, more than 1,084.57 lakh tonnes of sugarcane were used by about 118 sugar mills.

How Much Sugar Will India Export in 2025?

As per Sugar export data, India's sugar exports to Somalia reached 287,204 tonnes as of April 8 of the current 2024–25 marketing year, with a maximum shipment of 51,596 tonnes, the trade group AISTA reported on Wednesday.

In India, sugar exports were permitted on January 20, 2025, for the 2024–25 marketing year. The maximum amount that can be exported is one million tons. As of April 8 of the current marketing year, mills have exported 287,204 tonnes of sugar, according to the All India Sugar Trade Association (AISTA). Sugar Export Data from India: Total Shipments

The report states that 17,837 tons of sugar are being loaded. Afghanistan (48,864 tonnes), Sri Lanka (46,757 tonnes), Libya (30,729 tonnes), and Somalia (51,596 tonnes) have received the largest shipments of all exports to date.

Nonetheless, according to ISMA, India is expected to export roughly 0.9 million metric tons of sugar by 2025. The primary cause of this is the expected increase in sugar production for the upcoming season, although ethanol diversion and domestic demand also contribute.

During the specified time frame, it exported 27,064 tonnes to Djibouti, 21,834 tonnes to the United Arab Emirates, 21,141 tonnes to Tanzania, 5,589 tonnes to Bangladesh, and 5,427 tonnes to China.

India is exporting sugar at a "slow but expected to pick up in one month" rate, according to AISTA.

"Since ethanol is a significant component of transportation fuel, the effect of declining crude prices on sugar prices must be observed," it continued. India is the world's largest producer of sugar, but during 2023–2024, its exports were limited.

Sugar Export from India: 2023-24

Despite certain restrictions, India exported about 3 million metric tons of sugar in the fiscal year 2024. As a result, India's global market share increased from 8.52% in 2018 to 10.85% in 2023, with exports totalling approximately $4.32 billion.

For the 2023–2024 marketing year (October–September), India has banned sugar exports to boost domestic supply and keep retail prices under control. The government's choice is consistent with its efforts to guarantee affordability for residents.

However, according to the TRQ quotas and concessions granted in 2023, sugar exported from India to the US and EU is not subject to the restrictions.
