India is exporting sugar at a "slow but expected to pick up in one month" rate, according to AISTA.
"Since ethanol is a significant component of transportation fuel, the effect of declining crude prices on sugar prices must be observed," it continued. India is the world's largest producer of sugar, but during 2023–2024, its exports were limited.
Despite certain restrictions, India exported about 3 million metric tons of sugar in the fiscal year 2024. As a result, India's global market share increased from 8.52% in 2018 to 10.85% in 2023, with exports totalling approximately $4.32 billion.
For the 2023–2024 marketing year (October–September), India has banned sugar exports to boost domestic supply and keep retail prices under control. The government's choice is consistent with its efforts to guarantee affordability for residents.
